FULL / PROBATIONARY MEMBERSHIP

REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME OR REMAIN A FULL MEMBER OF THE SAGMJ

  1. An applicant must be proposed and seconded by current Full members who have personal knowledge of the candidate. Application forms that do not have signatures of both proposer and seconder are not tabled for consideration by the Committee.

  2. An applicant must be able to satisfy the Guild Committee that he/she makes a regular, significant and current contribution to motoring journalism in areas of writing, broadcasting and/or photography. He/she has to have done this type of work for a reasonable period of time in the eyes of the Committee and have the intention of continuing to do so for the foreseeable future.

    • In this regard Pdf's of or links to published articles must be submitted to the Guild office on a regular basis.

  3. Should the applicant have an online publication he/she would need to implement Google Analytics in order for the Guild to check the site activity

    • In this regard reports of a minimum of three (3) consecutive months must be submitted before the application will be considered.

  4. All members must agree to abide by the SAGMJ Constitution, the SAGMJ Code for Acceptance of Road Test Vehicles and the SAGMJ Code of Good Practice. The Guild expects a high standard of professional conduct and an acceptable standard of general behaviour from all its individual members. Each member of the Guild is required to ensure that neither the name of the Guild nor of its members is brought into disrepute either by their own direct actions or utterances, or by inference and innuendo.

  5. An applicant must agree to acknowledge and support the Guild's Pledge: The details of the pledge are as follows:

    I pledge to act in support of road safety initiatives which are associated with and / or arranged by the SAGMJ. These will be evidenced in my driving style, my adherence to road rules and the manner in which my conduct may impact on the safety of other motorists. I further pledge to use the platform made available to me as a journalist to positively influence all whom I have contact with.

  6. Full members must meet the high standard of driving skills expected of them by the Guild and pass the Guild’s driving courses on a regular basis (at least every two years).

  7. Full / Probationary members must hold a current car driver’s licence for use in South Africa.

  8. Full members are subject to routine annual scrutiny by the Committee to ensure they are still involved in motoring activities and that they continue to meet all the criteria for eligibility.

  9. New Full members will be required to attend the Guild’s writing workshop.

  10. Full members shall not undertake any work which could become prejudicial to their credibility as motoring journalists and hence the good name and credibility of other members and the Guild as a whole.

  11. All members must be up to date with all due payments.

  12. On acceptance all new Full members will be granted Probationary status and membership activated after receipt of payment for the current entrance fee and a year’s subscription.

    • In this regard a Tax Invoice will be send to the new member.

  13. 1.The Probationary status will remain in force until:

    • The Committee is satisfied that the member is worthy of the status of Full Membership. Upgrade requests are made to the Guild office after which the application will again be reviewed by the Committee.
    • The member has completed the required Guild's approved Driving Skills Course (The MasterDrive’s Defensive Driver Training Course. Contact person: Venessa Jackson(011 867 4778, bookings@masterdrive.co.za).
    • The member has provided proof of at least one published article on road safety (within the arena in which he/she operates). (For further information please contact Eugene Herbert, Committee member entrusted with Road Safety at racsa@mweb.co.za).
    • The member has provided proof of at least one published article on the motoring industry.
    • The Committee is satisfied that regular and significant contributions to motoring journalism are made by the member.

    • The member with an online publication has send Google Analytics reports on a monthly basis.

THE FOLLOWING NEED TO BE SUBMITTED IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR FULL MEMBERSHIP TO THE SAGMJ

  1. The completed F2 application form signed by the applicant, as well as a signature by a proposer and seconder. The latter should be Full members of the Guild.
  2. A representative range of supporting material (clearly indicating your name and the name and the date of publication/broadcast) to indicate the extent and frequency of the motoring work you do.
  3. Should you have an online publication you would need to implement Google Analytics in order for us to check your site activity. Please ensure that reports are directed to sagmj@iafrica.com at least one month before your application will be considered.
  4. A short motivation why you would like to become a Full member of the Guild.
  5. A recent ID-sized photograph.
  6. A photocopy of your current driver’s licence.
